Update 6/12, 9:30 AM: The Bike-A-Thon and Green Roots Festival have been postponed to the scheduled rain date of Sunday June 26th due to the forecast of thunderstorms for June 12th.This Sunday, June 12th is the 24th Annual Bike-a-Thon and Green Roots Festival, held by Bikes Not Bombs. For those who aren’t familiar with it, BnB is a great organization in Jamaica Plain that “promotes bicycle technology as a concrete alternative to war and environmental destruction.”
The Bike-a-Thon is a big charity ride to raise funds for all the work that BnB does here and abroad. It is followed by the Green Roots festival from 12-5:30 at the Stony Brook T stop, an after-party with food, music, and raffles. It’s also a great opportunity to learn about the many environmental, bicycle, and social justice groups working in Boston, who will be there with tables and exhibits.
I’d say this is an event definitely worth making the trek down to Jamaica Plain–it’s a lovely ride if you go through the Emerald Necklace Conservancy, and then you can hang around and explore one of Boston’s coolest neighborhoods. Check out the website for more information (http://bikesnotbombs.org/bike-a-thon/2011), and maybe I’ll see you there!
